Florianópolis is the capital of the Brasilian state of Santa Catarina, situated on the south coast of Brazil, on the island of Santa Catarina.
With a population of half a million, and first colonized by Portuguese immigrants, who came from the islands of Açores. It gained international exposure during the last 20 years, when its natural beauty was discovered by surfers and other outdoor athletes from all over the world.
Mainly fueled by surf and related sports and activities, Floripa became the hot spot for WCT competition in South America, and it is known as the "New Zealand" of South America, because of all the existing structures for the practice of different radical and extreme outdoor sports, like surfing, kitesurfing, wakeboarding, sandboarding, windsurfing, paragliding, parachuting, skateboarding, mountainbiking and abseiling, just to mention a few...
There are about 100 beaches, half of those have excellent conditions for surfing, like Santinho, Joaquina, Praia Mole, Campeche, Moçambique, Ingleses and Brava.
Santinho, on the north of the island, is our homebreak, where you can find powerful waves, as well as mellow waves, which is a good reason for the WQS to hold a contest there, but is also perfect for beginners.
The locals are friendly and Floripas nightlife is well known and enjoyed, with its bars, restaurants and clubs.
